Kitchen Fire, North Logan

For immediate release

North Logan, UT 08/06/2012

At 1439 fire units were dispatched to 300 E 2500 N #36 for a working fire. Upon arrival, the duty officer found a small fire confined to the stove and surrounding area. A police officer had extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher but the fire rekindled. The first arriving truck company was able to completely extinguish the fire with a water can extinguisher. A crosslay was pulled as a backup. Automatic aid units were allowed to go back into service upon extinguishment. The building department was contacted to assess the structure and assist the residents with utilities and occupancy.

The fire was determined to be unintentional in nature, caused by a candle left on the stove to melt. The glass container became hot and broke, which allowed the wax to ignite on the flame from the gas stove. A juvenile was asleep in the home, heard the popping noise from the broken glass and the tone from one working smoke detector. The boy then attempted to extinguish the fire and called 911 and left the residence when he was unable to extinguish it. No injuries were reported. Damage estimated at $2,500.
