Close call prompts safety near rivers

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Logan, Utah –May 4 2012 With the peak water flows nearly upon us, it is a time to take special precautions along our river banks. That point was especially evident yesterday when a 12 year old girl was swept away in the Logan River while fishing with family friends.  An adult male entered the water and was also swept down river while trying to rescue the young girl.

At 6:19 pm Thursday afternoon rescuers from Logan City Fire Department and Cache County Search and Rescue were called out to find and rescue these two individuals who had been carried down the Logan River between 600 West and 1000 West.

As rescuers arrived they found the young girl was able to self-rescue soon after being swept away.  However, the adult was washed farther down river and was found by rescuers clinging to a tree branch on the other side of the river. Fortunately, while Logan City Firefighters and Cache County Search and Rescue where getting access to him, the male individual was able to work his way to shore. Both individuals where checked out by Logan City Fire Paramedics before being released.  Thankfully, in this case, everyone turned out to be unhurt.

Officials would like to strongly encourage everyone to use extra caution this time of year as the rivers run deceivingly high and the water temperature is dangerously cold. Tragedy can only be avoided if people keep a safe distance from the water.  We must all be vigilant in our efforts to keep safe near the water.
