Hazardous Material Incident

Logan, Utah – April 28, 2014 – The Logan Fire Department responded to a 911 call at appox. 8:30 am to 885 North 600 West, Schreiber Foods.  The call requested assistance for a chemical spill.

Upon arrival the facility had evacuated approx. 200 employees from the affected area.  No injuries were reported.  It was discovered that an employee had transferred a chemical form one tote container to another.  Pressure began to build in the tote eventually causing it to burst.  The exact cause of the pressure is still under investigation.

When the tote burst a fork lift, drop down door sustained damaged.  No other damage was sustained by the building.  Logan Fire Department worked as partners with Schreiber Foods facility Haz Mat Team to respond to the spill.  The chemical was contained within the facility.  There was an odor in the vicinity from the facilities ventilation system. There was no danger to residents or the community.

The chemical is used to sanitize and clean equipment and contained a mixture including hydrogen peroxide.

Employees were allowed back into the building in about 45 minutes and production resumed in about 2 hours.
