FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Logan, Utah – January 25, 2012 – At 9:45 this morning the Logan Fire Department responded to an automatic fire alarm at the Logan LDS Institute near the USU Campus.

Upon arrival the engine company found smoke in the building and upgraded the incident to a structure fire bring automatic aid from other agencies.

Fire crews were directed to the kitchen area of the building and found bystanders had attempted to put the fire out using fire extinguishers.  Firefighters extinguished the remaining flames. The fire was confined to the room of origin.  Firefighters used fans to clear the smoke that had filled the building.  Due to the size of the building smoke removal took a significant amount of time.  All occupants of the building were evacuated and classes for the remainder of the day were canceled.  The fire heavily damaged the ceiling, cabinets and wall above a stove top cooking appliance.

Fire investigation found that a cardboard box had been placed on the stove top cooking appliance which had inadvertently been turned on.  The fire was determined to be accidental and no injuries to occupants or firefighters were reported.
