Structure Fire

Logan, Utah – Oct. 14, 2014 – The Logan Fire Department with automatic aid departments responded to a report of a structure fire at 273 West 240 North.  The fire was reported by a neighbor that could see smoke coming from the garage. At the time of the fire there were a number of simultaneous calls.

Upon arrival the fire department found a single family home with fire through the roof above a two car garage.  The fire department began extinguishing the fire from the outside until it was safe to enter and extinguish the remaining fire.  The home was occupied at the time of the fire by a couple and their pet.  

The home sustained extensive heat and smoke damage throughout all rooms.  Damage estimated at $100,000.  Fire crews will continue to stay on scene to control any hot spots throughout  the night and will conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire later in the morning.

Smithfield Seeks New Volunteer Firefighters

SMITHFIELD, Utah — Smithfield Fire Department will be holding its new hire testing at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the fire station, 325 West 100 North. Anyone interested in joining the department is encouraged to pick up an application at Smithfield City Hall, 96 S. Main. Applications will also be available the night of the test at the fire station.

Capt. Thomas Maples explained that the test, which is held twice a year, includes a written exam and a physical skills and agility exam. Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the skills and agility exam. 

Chief Jay Downs said the department provides fire and emergency medical services to residents in Smithfield, Hyde Park, Amalga and Benson. There is no experience necessary, but experience will provide additional points in the selection process. Downs added that participants should be in good physical shape and be willing to make the necessary commitments to the department.

Those commitments include completing basic structural firefighting, wildland firefighting, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training within two years of being hired. The department pays for the training, but the classes require more than 200 hours usually during evenings and on weekends. Additionally, new volunteers must complete a 5-week orientation class and participate in weekly training drills.

Smithfield Fire Department does not have a residency requirement. But successful candidates are required to stay at or near the station when they are on duty, which is approximately 1 night per week. For more information, call 563-3056 ext. 405.

Shed Fire

Trenton Utah-July 15 The Trenton fire department with automatic aid from Lewiston, Clarkston, Newton, Cache County EMS and the Cache County Fire District responded to a shed fire located at 1412 East Main Trenton. The call came in approximately 10:45 AM.

The first arriving engine found a fully involved shed with two one thousand gallon propane tanks next to the burning structure. The Trenton fire department was able to obtain a water source and quickly cooled down the propane tanks and extinguished the fire.

The shed contained two small tractors, a jeep and some miscellaneous tools. There were no injuries to firefighters or bystanders. The damage is estimated around $15,000. The cause of the fire is still under Investigation.

Cache County Fire District Fire Restrictions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cache County Utah-July 11^th Due to current and forecasted weather conditions in northern Utah, the State Forester as determined that measures must be taken to prevent costly and damaging forest and rangeland fires. Therefore, pursuant to Utah State Law, Section 65A-8-212 Utah Code 1994. The following acts are prohibited on the areas, roads and trails described below until rescinded by the Utah State Forester. Therefore all unincorporated private lands in Cache County will be under fire restrictions beginning July 14^th 2014. The restrictions will be as follows.

1. Setting, building, maintaining, attending or using open fires of any kind, except campfires built within the facilities provided for them in improved campgrounds, picnic areas or permanently improved places of habitation.

2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared to mineral soil.

3. Discharging or using any kind of fireworks, tracer ammunition or other pyrotechnics devices including explosive targets.

4. Cutting, welding, or grinding metal in areas of dry vegetation. 

The following persons are exempted from the above prohibitions:

1. Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the prohibited act at a specific location.

2. Any State or Federal Fire Officer or firefighting forces in the performance of an official duty.

The fireworks season has arrived

Please remember that fireworks are in fact explosives. They can be dangerous when used improperly.

Fireworks may be sold in the State of Utah from June 23 to July 27.

Fireworks may be discharged in the State of Utah from July 1 – July 7 between the hours of 11am to 11pm, extended to midnight on July 4.

Fireworks may also be discharged in the State of Utah from July 21 – July 27 between the hours of 11am to 11pm, extended to midnight on July 24.

At this time there are no restrictions throughout Cache County. However do to the changing of environmental conditions the restrictions for the 24^th holiday have yet to be determined.

Fireworks safety tips:

·         Buy and use only legal fireworks.

·         Read and follow label directions.

·         Fireworks should only be used under adult supervision, even sparklers can injure. Sparklers burn at up to 1,800 degrees and are the third leading cause of eye injuries.

·         Keep a bucket of water or a hose at discharge site.

·         Light one firework at a time. If they don’t ignite, don’t try to relight them.

·         Always place fireworks on a hard flat surface.

·         Dispose of fireworks safely. Soak in water before throwing them in the trash.

·         Never point fireworks at others.

·         Wear eye protection.

·         Don’t drink alcohol while setting off fireworks.

Aerial fireworks safety tips:

·         Aerial fireworks are designed to travel up to 150 feet into the air and then explode.

·         Aerial fireworks shall be placed on a hard level surface outdoors, in a clear and open area prior to ignition.

·         Anyone under the age of 16 shall not handle or operate aerial fireworks.

·         Ignition of aerial fireworks shall be a minimum of 30 feet from any structure or vertical obstruction.

·         Aerial fireworks shall not be ignited within 150 feet of the point of sale.

·         Please read and obey all safe handling instructions before using aerial fireworks.

Paradise Barn Fire

Paradise, Utah June, 5 2014 -The Paradise fire department with automatic aid from Hyrum, Wellsville, Cache County EMS and the Cache County Fire District responded to a barn fire located at 9280 South 200 West Paradise. The fire was reported at 7:57 AM by a neighbor.

The first arriving units found fire coming from the main entrance at the front of the structure. Fire personal where able to quickly contain the fire to a single room in the barn.

The barn did sustain minor damage. The damage is estimated at roughly $5,000 no other structures where damaged. The cause of the fire was electrical.

Logan Structure Fire

Logan, Utah – May 22, 2014 – The Logan Fire Department with automatic aid response from North Logan, Smithfield and Cache County responded to a report of a structure fire at 1176 North 250 East.  The fire was reported by an individual that could smell smoke in the area east of the Stadium 6 movie theaters.  The caller then found the home that was on fire. 

Upon arrival the fire department found a single family home with fire coming from two basement windows on the back side of the building.  The fire department began extinguishing the fire from the outside until it was safe to enter and extinguish the remaining fire.  The home was unoccupied and was being remodeled at the time of the fire. 

The home sustained extensive heat and smoke damage throughout all rooms.  Damage estimate is undetermined at this time.  Fire crews will continue to be on scene to control any hot spots during the night and will conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire later this morning.  No injuries reported.

Logan Barn Fire

Logan, Utah May,1 2014 - The Logan fire department with automatic aid from Wellsville, Hyrum, Paradise, North Logan, Mendon, Smithfield and the Cache County Fire District responded to a barn fire located at 1360 West 940 South Logan. The fire was reported at 7:36 PM by a neighbor.

Upon arrival the fire department found a two story barn with heavy fire coming from the loft. Fire units where able to put water on the fire quickly. Fire personal had to lay approximately 2000 feet of 5 inch hose from the fire hydrant located on 1000 West. Fire personal where able to extinguish the fire without any injury to civilians or fire personnel, however a number of baby chickens did perish in the fire.

The barn did sustain significant damage. The damage is estimated at $80,000 no other structures where damaged. The cause of the fire was a heat lamp that was being used to warm baby chickens.

Hazardous Material Indicent

Hazardous Material Incident

Logan, Utah – April 28, 2014 – The Logan Fire Department responded to a 911 call at appox. 8:30 am to 885 North 600 West, Schreiber Foods.  The call requested assistance for a chemical spill.

Upon arrival the facility had evacuated approx. 200 employees from the affected area.  No injuries were reported.  It was discovered that an employee had transferred a chemical form one tote container to another.  Pressure began to build in the tote eventually causing it to burst.  The exact cause of the pressure is still under investigation.

When the tote burst a fork lift, drop down door sustained damaged.  No other damage was sustained by the building.  Logan Fire Department worked as partners with Schreiber Foods facility Haz Mat Team to respond to the spill.  The chemical was contained within the facility.  There was an odor in the vicinity from the facilities ventilation system. There was no danger to residents or the community.

The chemical is used to sanitize and clean equipment and contained a mixture including hydrogen peroxide.

Employees were allowed back into the building in about 45 minutes and production resumed in about 2 hours.

Paradise Barn Fire

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Paradise, Utah- March 4th 2014 The Paradise Fire Department with automatic aide from  Hyrum, and Wellsville and the Cache County Fire District were dispatched to a working stucture fire at 9800 South 380 East Paradise. The fire was reported at 6:19 P.M. by a passing motorist.

Upon arrival the fire department found a hay barn fully involved. The barn contained 200 tons of dairy quality hay, 150 tons of straw, bailer, toyhauler trailer with UTV and four wheelers inside. Due to the lack of fire hydrants in the county additional tenders from Logan, Smithfield, and North Logan were dispatched to the scene.

Damage is estimated at $195,000. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. Fire is currently under investigation.

Structure Fire North Logan

**UPDATE** February 12, 0609
The homeowner had made some repairs to a natural gas vehicle which was parked in the garage. It is believed the repairs were not successful which caused natural gas to leak from the vehicle's tank until an ignition source was contacted, a short distance from the vehicle. There were several explosions cause by propane canisters stored in the garage. The contents of several rooms as well as the basement were able to be saved, however, due to the partial collapse of the roof the structure is not habitable.

There was some heat damage to the siding of a neighboring house but firefighters were able to keep it cool enough to prevent the fire from spreading.

There were no reported injuries, the residents are being cared for by neighbors and the homeowner's three cats were rescued.

Fire units will remain on scene for several hours.

North Logan, Utah February 12, 2014 The North Logan Fire Department with mutual aid responded to a working structure fire located at 1361 East 1980 North in North Logan at 1:25 AM.

The first arriving units found heavy fire coming from the garage. The fire did extend into the main part of the home. The family evacuated the home without any injuries. Fire personal were able to save three cats from the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
